Any of the 'Thorne'novels by Mark Billingham (read them in order if you can)

Also anything by Stuart Mcbride,all set in and around Aberdeen,vefy gritty stuff.

Yes,Mcrae is an excellent character as is his gobby female bods (her name escapes me)

Yep, and the complete McCrae series.
McCrae's gobby boss is DI Steel, a brilliant character.

Another good thriller writer - Simon Kernick.
Anything by him, but a good start is 'Severed'

Don't know if it fits your criteria but I read a great book not long ago, 'Shantaram' by Gregory David Roberts.

The Jack Reacher books by Lee Child are all pretty average.

The Enemy is the best one by an absolute mile though and a really, really good thriller.

Well written too unlike a lot of the other Reacher books which I have suspected for a while are actually ghost written.

The bourne trilogy books- miles better than the films

THe passage trilogy by Justin Cronin really good take on an apocalyptic future with a vampire twist
